Parker Edinburgh moves to a bigger, better location

The Parker Merchanting Edinburgh branch has moved to a new premises which allows us to keep even more products in stock and deliver even better service.
Situated in the Seafield Industrial Estate the new 22,500 square foot building is a better fit for our business needs and will give our customers better access. The branch will stock products from our 7 core ranges which include PPE, Clothing, Road Works and Site Equipment, Tools, Janitorial and Hygiene and Workplace Health and Safety.
We will also have a new Trade Counter Manager but the warehouse will still be run Mike Reid and Paul Wright so you can be assured that you will still get the same great service.

New Aberdeen Trade Shop

We are pleased to announce the opening of our new Aberdeen trade shop.
The new branch will stock a wide range of products from our seven products groups, including PPE, clothing, road works and equipment, site equipment, tools, janitorial and hygiene, workplace health and safety.
The new trade shop is located on Cloverhill Road in Bridge of Don and is now officially open after our three day grand opening event that was held on 21st to 23rd April. The event was supported by some of our key suppliers and offered attendees 10% off trade shop purchases from stock over the three days.

The annual Builder and Engineer Awards brings together the construction industry’s best and brightest to celebrate the stand-out achievements of the last 12 months. However, for Parker Merchanting, the devil really is in the detail; it is not just about providing product but rather an expert support arm via a partnership approach. Working alongside key suppliers, with customers that include Redrow Homes and Carillion, Parkers dedicated sales team are regular visitors to their sites making sure they are equipped with the most practical and up-to-date solutions and are using recommended PPE correctly.  

More so, as ‘Head to Toe’ PPE specialists, the team can also offer a consultative approach  through a range of Training and Consultancy services which include, Free PPE surveys, PPE tool box talks, Face Fit Testing by our certified team, Environmental Spill Control Survey and  Prescription Safety Eyewear service. 

In a bid to raise awareness of the issue of air pollution and the importance of having the right respiratory gear, Parkers are a real driving force in raising safety standards particularly within the RPE (Respiratory Protection Equipment) market with their regional staff fully accredited to carry out Fit2Fit testing. Parkers are unique in their approach and are able to test companies’ personnel nationwide on the masks of their choice and are not tied into one brand or manufacturer. With the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)  estimating that over 500 construction workers die every year as a result of exposure to silica dust here in the UK, this is a must for all businesses and continues to alleviate the danger for all.

Another example of best practice is Parker’s continual drive to raise the importance of Safety Prescription Eyewear. Both at trade events and on site, the Parker team continue to offer expert advice on how suppliers can accommodate individuals who require a corrective lens. Aligned to this, Parker Merchanting recently introduced a range of corrective lens safety spectacles and goggle adapted spectacles featuring  various frames than can be glazed with four types of prescription lens (single vision, bifocal, progressive or free form) and three different lens materials (polycarbonate, CR39 or toughened glass). The result is the assured upmost in eye safety for the visually impaired.

In addition to this can-do attitude, Parker Merchanting continues to go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure customers receive the best possible service and at the best possible price. 

It’s commitment to customer service excellence is shown in its recently upgraded web site. The new site provides key service innovations; live-stock availability at a national and local level, so that customers can order with confidence knowing that the PPE products they want are in stock. 

Better still, 2014 saw the introduction of an extended next-day delivery cut-off time of 8pm, in a complete industry first, plus the pilot of a same-day delivery service for those in access of the M25. Both of these initiatives are the first of their kind to be provided by any national PPE consumable supplier.

Collaborative Working

While Parkers respect that customers may have onsite full-time safety professionals, but there may also be occasions when they require additional external support, independent advice or project specific solutions that we can assist with.

With this in mind, late 2013 saw the launch of Parkers Training and Consultancy Service, playing an integral part in site safety solutions.  Parker Merchanting work directly with both the Health and Safety and Procurement teams at Redrow, Carillion and many other high profile names to ensure that regulation compliance is achieved and that all PPE products supplied are fit for purpose. A key aspect of its continued site safety is the provision of training and access to the experts – something Parker Merchanting excels in. 

Collaborative working is a standard part of the Parker Merchanting offering. The business understands that every site and customer is different and therefore what works for one may be entirely unsuitable for another. With this in mind, the business works directly with its customers on a one-to-one basis to understand what demands they face, along with the concerns of employees and then help to find suitable solutions.

Providing product manufacturers with access to site, alongside Parker Merchanting, ensures that the most suitable technology solutions are specified, that equipment is being used correctly and that improvements are made wherever possible. It is only through collaborative partnerships with companies such as Redrow Homes and the equipment manufacturers that Parker Merchanting believes a true health and safety culture can be established. 

To help customers even further, Parker Merchanting operates sessions called Toolbox Talks whereby a member of the Parker team will arrange for a manufacturer to visit a site and show employees how to use equipment safely. This is an important part of the working relationship for Parker Merchanting; ensuring that sites are not only provided with the correct safety equipment but to ensure it is used correctly, that employees understand the importance of correct specification and the pitfalls of not wearing the correct equipment. 

Educating people at every level of an organisation is imperative and health and safety decisions must be made with the users in mind. Site visits and collaborative working help to ensure that this becomes a reality and as a result, that health and safety becomes an essential part of everyday life, rather than a chore thus, in turn, helping raise standards for all.

It 'Wood' be Parker Merchanting to lead the way

Parker Merchanting, a leading UK supplier of PPE, site consumables, and traffic management, are proud to announce their FSC® Multi-Site Chain of Custody certification for a range of their timber products, and are the first in their market sector to receive this certification.

Having an unrivalled reputation for supplying high quality products and providing a reliable service to all of its customers, the decision was taken to apply for FSC certification after increasing calls for FSC products from their customers and their own desire to provide more sustainably resourced eco-friendly timber products.

FSC stands for 'Forest Stewardship Council®' and is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting responsible forestry. FSC certifies forests all over the world to ensure they meet the highest environmental and social standards.  Being FSC certified shows that a business complies with the highest social and environmental standards on the market.

The FSC Multi-Site Chain of Custody certification is primarily for larger companies that have multiple sites and share the same function, methods or procedures.

“At present none of our direct competitors have FSC certification. We understand the importance of being able to offer ethically and responsibly sourced products and the need to preserve our natural resources for the future,” explained Dominic Proctor General Manager, Parker Merchanting. “We are frequently being asked by our national customers if our wooden products are FSC, and it is very much part of our ethos to be market leaders, providing our customers with the very best, delivered on site and on time. We are delighted that we can now offer FSC products across all our branches to all our customers. ”

After a stringent auditing process across the whole business, Parkers are now able to show an unbroken complete chain of custody, from the forest all the way to the end user.   In order to become certified the company teamed up with the non-profit organisation NEPCon, which carried out the audit to ensure compliance. NEPCon manages the Rainforest Alliance’s Forestry Programme in Europe and provides services under their accreditation.

Upon signing with NEPCon, Parkers had to assign responsibilities, develop Chain of Custody procedures and train the relevant staff. The procedures encompassed most areas of the business such as sales, purchasing and warehousing.

Once NEPCon were happy with the written procedures and preparation, an audit was carried out at all the sites involved which included each branch and head office. Staff from different departments were interviewed to ensure they had received training and understood their roles. 

Parkers central office will now be responsible for controlling the Chain of Custody systems and audits of all sites annually, with NEPCon carrying out an audit once a year on a sample dependent on the number of sites within the certificate, to ensure that records are being maintained as required.

Parkers existing range of brushware is already sourced from an FSC supplier and the company plans to supply surveying products, including profile boards and setting out pegs, which are also FSC certified.

Parkers supports Jewson’s charity car wash

On Wednesday 20th August, Jewson’s held a charity car wash at their branch in Farnahm, Surrey, to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support. They approached Parkers to support them and help with this great cause.
Parkers were more than happy to help by donating equipment to use on the day so we sent Michael Facey along, armed with buckets, sponges, gloves and cleaning products.
The day was a great success and they managed to raise close to £100 for MacMillan Cancer Support. Jewson’s really appreciated our support and the equipment we donated.

The Speedy Integrated Services Show is Europe's largest private hire and services show, and brings together over 200 of Speedy’s suppliers under one roof. This years show was extended to two days allowing the Speedy delegates, customers and key contacts more time to see all of the products and services on show.
Pollyanna Woodward from Channel 5's Gadget Show was on hand to give live product demonstrations on stage and bring bit a of glamour to the show. National Account Manager, Jason Malt, demoed the new Endurasign with the help of Pollyanna and created quite a buzz around this new innovative product.
Parker Merchanting’s opened planned stand not only exhibited the standard range of products but included the Bolle safety glasses range and the new Regatta Hardwear range of clothing. Ecospill also joined us on our stand to demonstrate their Dirteeze wipes. 
"The feedback and interest from the show has been really good, we have found some great opportunities. It was exciting to demonstrate the Endurasign with Pollyanna, even if she did give me a bit of a grilling, and we think it can really help push this new product. The team and I have thoroughly enjoyed the show and we have met some great people." Said Jason Malt, who attended the show with his team.

The Executive Hire Show is the must see national exhibition for the tools, equipment and plant hire industry. It brings the hire industries leading suppliers and hire companies together under one roof to network and discuss future business opportunities.
This year’s show is the 8th Executive Hire Show and was the biggest show to date. With a record 148 exhibitors packed into the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Innovation was key at this year’s show, with suppliers showcasing not just the best products but the products that ‘works smarter’, with many of the products and machinery on display aimed at making the user’s business more efficient and more profitable. 
The trade-only event attracted over 2000 executives from procurement and purchasing departments from national and independent hire businesses throughout the UK and Ireland, and gave them the opportunity to see the latest products and take advantage of real ‘show only’ deals. 
Parker Merchanting’s stand was the biggest it’s ever been and with the help some of our key suppliers, it got lots of interest from the attendees and enabled us to find some great business opportunities. As well as exhibiting Parker Merchanting’s extensive range of PPE, Road Works and Janitorial products, Oxford Plastics, Bolle, Eco Spill, Cleenol, Walsall Wheelbarrows and Regatta joined us on our stand to exhibit their products and meet with the attendees.

Jewson Internal Build Exhibition & Suppliers Conference

The Jewson Internal Build Exhibition & Suppliers' Conference opened doors to greater business opportunities and stronger relationships for Parker Merchanting. 


The annual event held in Harrogate’s International Centre on the 6th February gave Parker Merchanting the opportunity to build new relationships, whilst strengthening existing ones, with over 1000 Jewson branch managers, senior managers and sales executives.
The exhibition had over 100 suppliers, zoned by product type, and showcased a wide range of products for the construction industry, from tools and building materials to heavy machinery and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Parker Merchanting’s stand displayed a variety of light building materials and supplies, that got a lot of interest from the attendees.  We gained great exposure with key Jewson personnel and had the chance to discuss future business opportunities whilst promoting Parker’s extensive product range.

Parker Merchanting’s National Account Manager, Jason Malt, attended the exhibition and the networking dinner to take full advantage of this chance to promote the Parker brand and strengthen relationships within Jewson’s.

Parkers Attend Safety & Health Expo

Parkers attended the Safety & Health Expo as Head to Toe PPE Specailists, as well as Corporate Branding Experts. As one of the industry leaders Parkers were in our element showing off our wide range of PPE. The 5 main areas covered were Rail, Industrial, Construction, Utilities and Food. Although well established in the market the show opened up new opportunities for Parkers particularly in the food sector.

As part of the on-the-day promotion we were able to digitise each of the 26 companies logos, embroider them onto a polo shirt and take it to the customer within 2 weeks, free of charge.

Based at the NEC in Birmingham, The Safety & Health Show attracts around 14,000 visitors across the 3 days it is open. It also runs alongside exhibitions of Fire Safety and Business Security.

ROSPA Awarded

Rexel UK Limited, has had its approach to occupational safety and health recognised in an awards scheme run by the safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). Rexel UK trading banners include Parker Merchanting, Newey & Eyre, WF Senate, Denmans and Wilts. Dating back 57 years, the RoSPA Awards scheme is the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK. It recognises commitment to accident and ill health prevention and is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. The scheme not only looks at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

David Rawlins, RoSPA's awards manager, said: “RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition. Rexel UK Limited has shown that it is committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award.” We are delighted that Rexel have received this award which recognises our commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our colleagues.
